Unbeaten University of Santo Tomas swept feisty One La Salle, 25-17, 25-22, to secure a semifinal berth in the 2026 Shakey’s Juniors National Invitationals on Wednesday, July 15, at the Playtime FilOil Arena in San Juan. The Junior Tigresses weathered a furious second-set fightback by One La Salle to notch their fourth win in as many outings and advance to the next round of the tournament backed by Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Potato Corner, and R and B Milk Tea. Nicole Pelaez smashed 10 of her game-high 12 points on attacks to lead the reigning Shakey’s Girls Volleyball Invitational League (SGVIL) Rising Stars Cup Division 1 champion. UST erected a commanding 20-13 lead in the second frame but Aislyn Alemana and Alyana Valdez anchored One La Salle’s 9-2 rally to cut the Junior Tigresses’ advantage to just one, 23-22. Antonella Jayobo, however, killed her team’s momentum with a costly service error before Anneli Manzanillo sealed the 55-minute match with an ace. “Very challenging kasi nahirapan kami sa second set lalo na’t marami kaming errors. Pero naka-adjust naman po,” said Pelaez, who added two kill blocks with three digs. Manzanillo added eight points while Erin Sotto and Jyrah Romias chipped in five markers each for the Junior Tigresses, who are playing also-ran Pusong Azul as of press time. One La Salle saw its three-game winning streak snapped to slip to a 3-2 win-loss record. Alemana had seven points and Valdez added five. Meanwhile, St. John’s Institute-Bacolod defeated Arellano University High School, 25-22, 25-17, to punch a Final Four ticket. Caera Celis blasted 12 points on nine kills, two aces and a kill block to power the Falcons to a 4-0 slate. Edz Escultura and Kristel Mirasol added nine and eight points, respectively, for the Bacolod-based squad. “Na-challenge po kami pero thank God we prepared naman po. It was a good win,” Celis said. The Lady Braves had their three-game winning run halted for a tie with One La Salle. Nina Cahanap finished with eight points for Arellano. UST and SJI-Bacolod clash on Thursday in the 1 p.m. curtain-raiser of a four-game playdate of the weeklong competition supported by Jetour, Baic, Eurotel, Victory Liner Rent & Go, F2 Logistics, Summit Natural Drinking Water, PusoP.com and Smart Sports. The top four teams after the single-round eliminations will square off in the knockout semis. The final and bronze medal matches are also winner-take-all affairs. All games in the competition, backed by technical partners Philippine Sports Commission, Commission on Higher Education, Mikasa, Asics, Rigour Technology and Team Rebel Sports, are available live and on-demand via PusoP.com livestream and Solar Sports.

The Deming High school volleyball program will enter the 2026 season under new leadership, as Abby Moyer, 22, takes over the Lady ’Cat program with an emphasis on fundamentals, relationships and long-term stability. The Fort Sumner native recently earned a bachelor of science in education degree with minors in biology and exercise science from New Mexico State University. She will teach biology at Deming High while serving as head volleyball coach. The opportunity came together after she attended an educator recruitment fair in Las Cruces, where Deming Pubic Schools administrators first met her. Once hired for the teaching position, she got an opportunity to realize a dream. “I’ve always wanted to coach,” Moyer told the Headlight. “After working volleyball camps, recreation programs and training younger players, I realized that’s what I wanted to do.” Her own playing career was cut short after high school. Following graduation, she underwent surgery for a heart condition discovered during her senior season. The medical setback prevented her from pursuing collegiate volleyball, despite receiving opportunities to continue playing. Instead, she shifted her focus toward education and coaching. “My family has always educated and coached — my dad, my aunt — so it was something I...

VOLLEYBALL – ZONE 7 - Allan Jarvis Rakotoarisoa vise le haut niveau
webmaster
July 15, 2026

Investment in sports infrastructure is an investment in aspirations of J&K youth: Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary
gk news service
July 15, 2026

More than 570 sports and youth infrastructure projects with an estimated investment exceeding Rs 650 crore are presently under various stages of planning and execution across Jammu & Kashmir during current financial year, under the Department of Youth Services & Sports, marking one of the most comprehensive infrastructure development programmes undertaken by the Department in recent years. The progress of this ambitious programme, as per an official statement, was reviewed by Commissioner Secretary, Youth Services & Sports, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary on Tuesday, chairing the first quarterly review of the implementation roadmap initiated earlier this year. The meeting was attended by Director General, Youth Services & Sports, Special Secretary YSS, Secretary, J&K Sports Council, FA/CAOs, JDP, senior officers of the Administrative Department, engineering agencies, Heads of Wings, District Youth Services & Sports Officers from all twenty districts and officers of the J&K Sports Council. The review covered Capital Expenditure, Special Assistance to Capital Investment (SASCI), Centrally Sponsored Schemes including the Khelo India Mission, Revenue Expenditure, Budget Announcements and district-wise implementation of sports infrastructure projects. The Commissioner/Secretary said that the Department’s infrastructure strategy is fully aligned with the vision of the Khelo Bharat Niti, with emphasis on creating an equitable, accessible and future-ready sports ecosystem capable of serving every region and every section of society. Dr Choudhary observed that while significant investments have already transformed sports infrastructure over the past few years, the current phase represents a strategic shift from isolated project execution to a planned, data-driven expansion of sports infrastructure across urban centres, rural areas, border districts, tribal habitations, remote mountainous regions and other underserved locations. He said the objective is to ensure that every young person in Jammu & Kashmir has access to quality sports facilities within reasonable proximity, while simultaneously creating centres of excellence capable of nurturing national and international sporting talent. The meeting reviewed the progress of 315 CapEx projects being implemented by the Directorate of Youth Services & Sports during 2026-27, including 167 ongoing works, 140 new projects and eight non-construction initiatives, in addition to projects under SASCI, Budget Announcements and other flagship programmes. The J&K Sports Council is simultaneously implementing 263 infrastructure projects, comprising 195 ongoing works, 57 new works and 11 SASCI Disaster Component projects, reflecting an unprecedented scale of coordinated infrastructure development across the Union Territory. A comprehensive district-wise review was undertaken of all major projects. The Commissioner/Secretary reviewed progress on development of Khel Gaon, Nagrota as a flagship multi-sport hub through establishment of a Lawn Tennis Academy, new Directorate headquarters, Strength & Conditioning Centre, Youth Hostel and remodelling of cricket infrastructure. Progress was also reviewed on major new projects including construction of Khel Bhawans and integrated residential sports facilities at Rajouri, Ramban, Samba, Srinagar, Anantnag, Kulgam, Poonch, Jammu. and Nagrota; two Border Sports Academies; the proposed Centre for Mountaineering & Skiing at Sanasar; youth hostels at Nagrota, Wazir Bagh and Government College of Physical Education, Ganderbal; multi-purpose indoor halls; mini stadiums; sports academies; and playfield development works across districts. The review also covered major projects being executed by the J&K Sports Council, including synthetic football and hockey turfs at Bandhurakh, Jagti, Gassu Hazratbal, Azad Gunj Baramulla and Draggad Shopian; Olympic-standard swimming infrastructure and toddler swimming facilities at Gindun Rajbagh; athletic tracks at Khour, Mendhar and Tulibal; sports stadiums at Sogam, Birpur, Panthan Thathri, Rehal Bishnah, Budgam and Bhalwal; water sports facilities at Manasbal; Sports Complex at Nilandrus; Cricket Academies at Srinagar, Jammu, Udhampur and Anantnag; Gymnastics, Archery and Shooting Centres; High Performance Taekwondo Centres; and Centre of Cricket Excellence projects presently under execution. The meeting noted significant progress under the Playfield Development Programme, under which 108 playfields are being developed across Jammu & Kashmir this year at an estimated cost of over Rs 39 crore, besides implementation of 118 additional sports infrastructure projects, including indoor stadiums, multipurpose halls, youth hostels, volleyball courts, badminton courts, pickleball courts, cricket practice facilities, sports office buildings and allied infrastructure aimed at strengthening grassroots participation and community engagement in sports. Reviewing implementation under the Khelo India Mission, the Commissioner Secretary also assessed progress relating to Khelo India Centres, procurement of sports equipment, strengthening of centres of excellence, cricket academies and athlete support infrastructure, directing that these initiatives should complement the rapidly expanding physical infrastructure to create a complete sporting ecosystem across the Union Territory. In a significant policy direction, Dr Choudhary reviewed the creation of the Department’s first comprehensive geo-spatial inventory of sports infrastructure by geo-tagging every stadium, playfield, indoor hall, youth hostel, academy, sports complex and allied asset under both the Directorate and the J&K Sports Council. The integrated GIS-based platform will support scientific infrastructure planning, lifecycle maintenance, utilisation assessment, convergence with other development programmes and identification of infrastructure-deficit areas requiring future investment. He further directed preparation of district-wise infrastructure gap analyses based on population, accessibility, sporting potential and regional requirements so that future investments are guided by objective assessment rather than incremental expansion. Particular emphasis, he said, should be placed on border areas, tribal regions, remote habitations, hilly districts and emerging urban settlements, ensuring balanced regional development and equitable access to sports infrastructure. Calling for strict adherence to timelines, the Commissioner/Secretary instructed all executing agencies to expedite DPR preparation, statutory approvals, tendering and execution while maintaining the highest standards of engineering quality, transparency and financial discipline. He also directed institution of digital project monitoring, periodic field inspections and outcome-based review mechanisms to ensure timely completion of every sanctioned project. Dr. Choudhary said that investment in sports infrastructure is ultimately an investment in the aspirations of the youth of Jammu & Kashmir. He observed that the Department’s vision extends beyond construction of physical assets to creation of vibrant community spaces that encourage participation, discover talent at the grassroots, promote healthy lifestyles and enable young sportspersons from every district to compete at national and international levels. He expressed confidence that the ongoing infrastructure expansion, supported by the Khelo India Mission and the policy framework envisaged under the Khelo Bharat Niti, would lay a strong foundation for making Jammu & Kashmir a leading sporting destination while creating enduring opportunities for generations of young people.

Canada’s women are through to the quarterfinals at the World Sitting Volleyball Championships after another dominant performance. The Canadians made quick work of France on Tuesday, sweeping their round-of-16 matchup 25-10, 25-12, and 25-14 in Hangzhou, China, to improve to 4-0 at the tournament. The win sends the world No. 2 team into the quarterfinals, where it will face No. 9 Iran on Wednesday, July 15 at 3:30 a.m. ET with a spot in the final four on the line. “I think overall we performed well,” Canada’s Anna Dunn said after the win. “We had some moments where we were a little bit lethargic and sluggish, but we came back into the game. I think we did a really good job bouncing back from uncharacteristic mistakes. “It’s great that we have such an amazing group of girls and a fantastic support staff and coaches who pull us back in together,” Dunn added.

Lakewood Ranch-area residents divided on proposed ice rink for Premier

Plans for an ice rink at the Premier Sports Campus North are receiving mixed reviews from Lakewood Ranch area residents. On June 16, Manatee County commissioners authorized County Administrator Charlie Bishop “or his designee to move forward with a proposed business transaction” with Icemann Development LLC to build a 190,000-square-foot multiplex. The vote was unanimous with Commissioner Jason Bearden absent. Once the details are worked out and reviewed by the county attorney, a land lease and operating agreement are expected to go before commissioners sometime in August or September. ____________ Specs These are approximate numbers. A site plan has not been finalized. Developer: Icemann Development LLC Cost: $80 million County share: $5 million from the Tourist Development Tax Facility Size: 190,000 square feet Lot size: 22 acres Rinks: Three full-size, one practice Permanent seats: 2,500 Parking: 800-spot paid parking garage and free surface parking Additional amenities: Food and beverage options, pro shop, orthopedic/medical services and athletic training Anticipated economic impact: $30 million annually Projected opening: Summer 2028 ____________ The plan is to build the facility on 22 acres of county-owned land at Premier, east of the Lakewood Ranch Library. The facility would include three full-size rinks and one warm-up rink, something that parents of children who figure skate or play hockey say is needed in the area. Greyhawk Landing’s Julie Fitzpatrick has 13-year-old twin boys, Owen and Connor, who play for the Gulf Coast Flames, a travel team based out of the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex. “People who don’t know much about figure skating or hockey don’t understand that two sheets of ice (or two rinks) between Ellenton and Estero is just simply not enough,” Fitzpatrick said. “There are kids who want to play — travel, rec and higher levels of hockey — but there aren’t enough teams (because of so few rinks).” Fitzpatrick also noted that as her kids have gotten older, their practice times have increasingly gotten later. Fall practice won’t start until 8:30 p.m. this year, which Fitzpatrick said will be tough as she gets up early to teach physical education at B.D. Gullett Elementary School. Residents opposed to the plan aren’t against another ice rink in Manatee County. They’re opposed to an ice rink of that size at Premier. “Put it in a location that makes sense, where there are hotels around and it's truly an event location,” Indigo’s Suzanne Henke said. Henke named Town Center Parkway as a more suitable location because it’s close to the interstate with plenty of nearby hotels. Greyhawk Landing's Owen and Connor Fitzpatrick play for the Gulf Coast Flames, a travel hockey league based out of the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex. Photo by Neal Alfano Commissioner Bob McCann will propose moving the ice rink to the grounds at the Bradenton Area Convention Center at the July 28 commission meeting because of an “infrastructure deficit.” McCann’s motion states that the convention center features “established, robust infrastructure, superior transit access, and the capacity to accommodate the project without placing further strain on an overburdened residential area,” while Premier “lacks the basic infrastructure to support (the project).” His motion further states that the lack of infrastructure at Premier is “setting the project up to fail and punishing local residents with more traffic.” Lorraine Lakes’ Rosella Stromberg plans to attend the July 28 meeting to express her concerns. The safety of local children riding bikes and waiting at bus stops is at the top of her list. Stromberg is a surgical nurse, who works with trauma patients. She said she is worried the “traffic generated by a regional sports facility will create additional vehicle congestion and more potential conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians.” She cited the lack of funding to widen Lorraine Road as an added issue. Stromberg often struggles to make a left turn onto Lorraine Road from Rangeland Parkway because the traffic backs up so much. Henke noted that Commissioner George Kruse often argues that commercial development should be approved near residential to keep cars off the road, so the combination of a sports arena without any nearby hotels will add "a gazillion cars to that little square of roadway." Premier is surrounded by residential communities. A drone captured an overhead view of Premier Sports Campus North in April. Courtesy image Stromberg said residents were promised parks, preserves and open space when moving to the area, “not a large commercial sports complex.” She fears the activity, noise and lighting that comes with a 190,000-square-foot events center will be “well beyond what residents reasonably expected” when purchasing their homes. Fitzpatrick travels all over the country for ice hockey. She cited hockey rinks in residential communities from Orlando to Salt Lake City. “These places are everywhere, mixed in the middle of big neighborhoods,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s a very community-based thing. That’s where the kids go to hang out.” Gordie Zimmerman, CEO and co-founder of Icemann , called Lakewood Ranch the "prized area that we've always wanted to be in." Zimmerman likes Lakewood Ranch so much that he's contemplating moving to the area. "The Tampa Bay Lightning are deeply excited about (a facility at Premier)," he said. "We're just happy to be here and to present something to the community." Fitzpatrick has visited the rink Icemann built in Wesley Chapel quite a bit. She called the AdventHealth Center Ice “an absolutely beautiful facility.” McCann has often cited “slushy ice” as a problem that leads to failing ice rinks, which Fitzpatrick agreed is a problem at older facilities during the summer months, but not at the AdventHealth Center. “It’s freezing in there,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what time of the year; it’s frigid.” Icemann's track record puts some minds at ease, such as Kruse, who said a facility of AdventHealth's quality will "do justice to what (Manatee County) is trying to do at Premier." "The goal of Premier is to have everything be tournament level," Kruse said. "I'm exited about this. This is going to be great." A preliminary site plan is presented to commissioners during the June 16 meeting. Courtesy image However, Stromberg is concerned that, unlike the aquatic and racket center that's being built at Premier, the ice facility will be owned by a corporation instead of the county. "Across the whole country, big corporations are buying up sports complexes, and then charging whatever they want," she said. McCann said he will ask how much residents will pay and how much the county will receive at the July 28 meeting. Initial discussions included 20% of the gross parking garage revenues going back to Manatee County. The amount of water that will have to be pumped into the arena also concerns Henke. According to the National Hockey League , "The ice-making and resurfacing process is among the most water-intensive operations in professional sports. On average, it takes 12,000 to 15,000 gallons of water to create an NHL regulation ice sheet, which typically is kept frozen for an entire season. Once created, ice re-surfacers scrape or shave the ice sheet and re-build it with a thin layer of water to ensure that the surface is optimal for the competitive play that takes place on it." "You're going to put in a four-sheet ice center, and you're telling us that we can't use water," Henke said referencing Manatee County's current water restrictions. The facility's main purpose will be ice-related sports, but that won't be its sole purpose. Manatee County is calling the proposed facility a "multiplex" that could be used to host additional sporting events, such as basketball, volleyball and cheerleading, along with community events and consumer shows. Special flooring can cover the ice. Elliott Falcione, executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said he’s also working with Icemann and Director of Public Safety Jodie Fiske to work the use of the facility as an emergency shelter into the land lease. But a facility that can house thousands of people is exactly what those in opposition don't want. Henke suggested a skate park and Stromberg suggested a community park as better fits for a residential neighborhood. "(Manatee County) very sneakily did all of this without any public input," Henke said. "They need to utilize the space they've got and stop putting things in every square inch of grassland that's left in Lakewood Ranch."
