Emiliano Martinez gives update from hospital bed as Chelsea face weeks without top goalkeeper
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez faces weeks on the sidelines after undergoing successful minor surgery following a sickening collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. The Argentina international was carried off on a stretcher after being hurt while attempting to clear a set-piece in the 67th minute at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday. Mike Penders, 21, replaced him as Xabi Alonso's side completed a 2-0 victory and recorded their first Premier League clean sheet of the season. Martinez was conscious when he left the ground before being taken to hospital, with the operation believed to have been for a jaw injury. The 34-year-old has now reassured supporters that his surgery went well, although his absence will thrust Penders into the spotlight ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. Posting from his hospital bed, Martinez wrote: "Thanks to everyone for the messages, the operation went well. "The most important thing is that we won and with a bow at 0 (goals). We'll be back in a few weeks." His wife, Mandinha, also offered reassurance, describing the issue as "nothing serious" and saying her husband would "soon be back to normal". Chelsea must now prepare for four matches before the November international break with their young Belgian goalkeeper expected to take over. Tottenham visit Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday before Alonso's team travel to Liverpool for a Carabao Cup tie. LATEST SPORTS NEWS: 'Dads will fight to keep jerseys on their kids': Manchester United hero's emotional concern for club's future Daniel Dubois names dream next opponent after emphatic win over Fabio Wardley Arsenal star reveals chilling discovery as he opens up on terrifying bomb ordeal Manchester United then head to west London, with an away league meeting against Sunderland completing Chelsea's schedule before the international pause. The focus will be on preparing Penders for Tottenham, with goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts tasked with helping the youngster adjust to his increased responsibilities. Standing at 6ft 7in, Penders has potential but is being handed his opportunity sooner than anticipated. Alonso had wanted experience between the posts, a preference which prompted Chelsea to recruit Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5million on a three-year contract. That arrival altered the picture for Penders, who had initially hoped to establish himself as first choice after spending last season on loan at Strasbourg. He expected to compete with Robert Sanchez, only for Chelsea's goalkeeping plans to change following their opening match away at Fulham. Mistakes in that fixture resulted in Sanchez being swiftly loaned to Como, where former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is manager. Penders' display at Everton provided an encouraging start. The Belgian dealt well with being introduced in difficult circumstances and came to clear a cross towards the back of his penalty area, earning appreciation from the travelling supporters. He also negotiated 13 minutes of added time as Chelsea protected their advantage and secured the clean sheet. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
